Song Analysis: Passenger’s : ” Staring at the Stars”

This song is hauntingly simple and honest. It’s light steeping melody seems carefree and childlike but the message s brings is about a reality we are all stuck in. It speaks of a world where we are forgetting what life should be. We are losing sight of the important things like love and dedication in all aspects of our lives. The lyrics are as follows in the black with my comments throughout in the blue:

” Staring at the Stars ” By : Passenger

“Tobacco stains our yellow teeth
And all our fingers and underneath
Our fingernails that clasp on sheets
And we try desperately to sleep
Hearts are sad and eyes are tired
And all this red bull keeps us wired
It gives us wings
It gives us rings around our eyes

This first section has always made me want to just curl up and sleep like it is odd for a teenager to sleep now a days. it used to be that when people were tired they would sleep but now it has become a game of who can stay up the latest or just even… I have work to do. This world is so fast paced that there is not time to stop and sleep among the poppy fields. It reminds me of how humans are slowly wearing themselves out. caught in this viscous cycle of being tired, trying to stay up then not being able to sleep so drinking more coffee or transfixed on buying more red-bull so that you will not crash midday during an important meeting.

We put three sugars in our tea
Sit to watch day time t.v
And laugh at mums who don’t know who the father is
And all our girlfriends are long gone
We watch too much internet porn
Who needs love when you’ve got silicone and strap ons

This section makes me want to cry at the state of humanity. Laughing at people struggling in life. Desiring plastic over the warmth and love of another human being … It makes me want to cry. They are brutally honest lyrics though and I think by hearing them we can all begin to realize some things about our world and those around us who fill its limits.

And beer bloats our spoilt guts
And shit jobs keep us in ruts
And keep us eyeing up the what’s and if’s and buts and maybe’s and
Falling over in the street
Is just a part of every week
And we lie drunkenly just staring at the stars

We used to be taught that we could reach those stars. Shoot for the moon if you fail at least you will land among the stars. I rarely get that vibe from anyone anymore— It seems we would rather lay half drunk on the streets then aspire to be something– soar through the galaxys.
Remember when they were in reach
And all the teachers used to teach
You can do anything if you put your mind to it
We put our minds to it all
But disappointment crashed the ball
We could’ve done anything
We just never quite knew it

We can do amazing things. We have. We could of done even more amazing things if we really put out minds to it. Let us hope that the future of humanity does put  their minds to it so that disappointment no longer crashes the ball.

So tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night
Tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night
Tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night
Tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night

Oh oh so tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night
Tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night
Tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night
Tie your scarf on tight
Its to be a cold night  ”
