Song Analysis ” Drops of Jupiter” By:Train

I figure most of you guys probably know this song even if you are not a big fan of it yourselves.I would not say I am a big fan of it myself, and I am surely not a huge Train fan, only really liking one or two of their songs. The reason I wanted to do this song for one of my posts though was because I have always loved the lyrics of this song rather than the way it  sounds, though I will not deny it does sound quite beautiful. I think I have found many versions of it covered by people on Youtube that I love way better then when Train sings it.The lyrics however are what attract me to this song and I believe even if you do not like the tune of a song very well it can be the lyrics that pull you in and make you want to listen.Let us break apart the lyrics below and find out why they are such soothing and beautifully penned lyrics.

“Drops Of Jupiter”

Now that she’s back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there’s a time to change, hey, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
I think there is something very metaphorical and beautiful about outer space. To draw from that beauty that  we cannot see, without the aid of telescopes and modern technology, adds this layer of mystery to the song. When describing a woman ,this makes one imagine a very beautiful, unknown lady ,that is perfectly shining and radiant but still has this unreachable layer to her. The type of woman that is so stunning that you stand mesmerized in her presence and you doubt you have any chance with her. The lyrics not only give you this impression of a woman but also create this imagery of outer space itself that is painted quickly ,in very few lines, with very simple lyrics. That is why I love those lyrics.

But tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star–
One without a permanent scar?
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?

The chorus itself is very simple but yet carries this atmospheric message of love and loss. I think the chorus is the type of message I want someone to sing to me someday if they fall in deep love with me.

Now that she’s back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey, hey (mmm)
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there’s room to grow, hey, hey, hey (yeah)

Now that she’s back in the atmosphere
I’m afraid that she might think of me as plain ol’ Jane
Told a story about a man who was too afraid to fly so he never did land

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way?
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind?
Was it everything you wanted to find?
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken?
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you’re wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance, five-hour phone conversation?
The best soy latte that you ever had and me

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way?

And tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

And tell me, did you fall for a shooting star,
One without a permanent scar?
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself?

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

And did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day?
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na
And did you fall for a shooting star, fall for a shooting star?
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na
And now you’re lonely looking for yourself out there.

The last collection of lyrics here repeat with the outer space theme and the idea of love and this beautiful woman.Which Train said was inspired by a dream he had after losing his mother. So not only can this song be thought of as a romantic love song but also a song about maternal love. This beautiful song a tribute Pat made to his mother has become a hit and a bright message to many people’s hearts.
Thank you( Let me know your thoughts about this song in the comments below.)
-Wishing you the most beautiful of days,Eva
